Statement of Beliefs

MCC's Statement of Faith...

This is the simple declaration of what MCC believes, as stated in our By-Laws, and accepted by our General Conference:

"Christianity is the revelation of God in Jesus Christ and is the religion set forth in the scriptures. Jesus Christ is foretold in the Old Testament, presented in the New Testament, and proclaimed by the Christian Church in every age and in every land.

Founded in the interest of offering a church home to all who confess and believe, Metropolitan Community Churches moves in the mainstream of Christianity.

Our faith is based upon the principles outlined in the historic creeds: Apostles and Nicene.

We believe:

-In one triune God, omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient, of one substance and of three persons: God - our Parent-Creator; Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God, God in flesh, human; and the Holy Spirit - God as our Sustainer.

-That the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God, showing forth God to every person through the law and the prophets, and finally, completely and ultimately on earth in the being of Jesus Christ.

-That Jesus...the Christ...historically recorded as living some 2,000 years before this writing, is God incarnate, of human birth, fully God and fully human, and that by being one with God, Jesus has demonstrated once and forever that all people are likewise Children of God, being spiritually made in God's image.

-That the Holy Spirit is God making known God's love and interest to all people. The Holy Spirit is God, available to and working through all who are willing to place their welfare in God's keeping.

-Every person is justified by grace to God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Church History

Celebrating our 36th year in Sacramento, in 2007!

Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Church (UFMCC) had it’s beginning a year before the New York Stonewall riots in 1969.  On October 6, 1968 a gathering of 12 people took place in Rev. Troy Perry’s living room in Huntington Park, CA.  Rev. Troy had a calling from God that a church be founded to reach out to ALL of God's children, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.  Never had a church like ours existed.

In 1970 Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) came to Sacramento.  San Francisco MCC named Sacramento a parish extension.  SF Deacon Vance Babinaeau began worship in an apartment at 16th and P Streets.

In early 1971, Joseph Gilbert, a MCC deacon from San Diego, moved to the Sacramento area to lead MCC Sacramento as an independent congregation rather than a parish extension of the San Francisco Church.

Following Rev. Troy Perry’s historical march from Oakland to Sacramento in 1971, MCC Sacramento was ready to be chartered in September 1971.  The thirteen charter members include the newly licensed Rev. Joseph Bilberty, Deacon Freda Smith, who was MCC Sacramento’s first delegate, and Board members Eugene Brockett and Madeline Reed.  Other members included Alan Irving, Keith Kimball, Jerry Frink, and Van Starr.

The newly chartered church occupied the un-restored Ruhstaller Building at 9th and J Streets in Downtown Sacramento.

In 1972 Rev. Joseph Gilbert left Sacramento to pastor the Phoenix church, and the congregation moved to a small basement church next to the railroad tracks at 16th and R Streets.  Rev. Joseph, wearing a leather chasuble, carrying the MCC Sacramento cross, marched the congregation from the Ruhstaller Building to the small basement church.

In 1972 at the UFMCC Conference, Robert Wolfe and Freda Smith were licensed to the ministry.

Rev. Wolfe left to work with the Denver MCC congregation then went on to found the Canadian MCC churches.

The small, struggling congregation of MCC Sacramento moved again, this time to Eugene Brockett’s living room, and Rev. Freda Smith became Pastor.

Rev. Freda Smith was ordained at the UFMCC General Conference in 1973 and was elected to a position on the UFMCC Board of Elders.  She was the first woman in both these positions.

Under Rev. Freda’s leadership, the small congregation out grew the living room space and stepped out on faith to rent an office building on Stockton Blvd.  For the first time the church started to acquire assets.  Although there never seemed to be enough money to make the next step, the steps were taken.  Folding chairs, desks, and office equipment were acquired.  The office building was outgrown and Sacramento MCC reached out to churches throughout the area seeking space to hold the still small but increasingly significant congregation.  Sacramento area churches were closed to us.

In 1974 the Odd Fellows Building, at 34th and Broadway, came on the market.  Church members gave sacrificially of their money and assets to obtain the building.  Members of the Board of Directors personally assumed the debt to move MCC Sacramento into the building.  Major improvements were made: fire exits, wiring, painting, new furnace, air conditioners, new chairs and carpeting was installed.

Three major halls and the storefront were filled to capacity with the many activities sponsored by the church.  AA met two or three times a day around the week in the North Hall.  Wellspring, a tearoom for neighborhood women, was opened by two catholic nuns in the storefront.  The social hall was used for church activities with the Samaritan Center serving meals there during the day on weekdays.  A very successful Country Western dance offered a non-alcohol alternative to the bars.

In 1990, needing additional space, The church sold bonds to purchase the old Bank of America building at the other end of the block from the Odd Fellows Building for Sanctuary Space.  The building proved to need too many costly improvements to be used comfortably for worship.  The roof leaked as did the entire west wall, the plumbing and electrical systems both needed repair or replacement.  Some inside remodeling, painting and carpeting were done, but the winters were both cold and wet with buckets placed all around the sanctuary to catch the rain.

In 1993, the Mather Field Air Force Base Chapel One went on the market. The church voted to place the bank building up for sale and place a bid on the Mather Chapel.  Although the initial bid was refused, the Air Force reissued the bids and our bid was accepted in early 1994.  MCC Sacramento purchased this building for additional worship space only.

On Palm Sunday 1994 tragedy struck, the Odd Fellow’s building was destroyed by fire. The Mather Chapel became the church’s only asset, and place to worship.  All the offices, equipment, activity outreaches and rental income were suddenly gone.

Truly this church is like a phoenix rising from the ashes.  It has surmounted the difficulty of operation during base closure when armed Air Force Personnel were at the main gates of Mather Field, checking on all who entered and left.  MCC Sacramento has risen above the demolition of buildings around it, the need to bring the building up to code through multiple improvements and alterations, street closures for construction, a lack of public utilities, and the street name being changed three times since the church has been located here.
